It’s started already with strikes of London Underground employees, taking action because the organisation intends to get rid of 800 station staff. The RMB Union insists this will compromise passenger safety. That’s probably true.

So, when the cuts fall in October, what else will be put at risk?  I don’t think we will feel the effects until next Spring, but when the expected savage cuts to the public purse take hold, not only passengers on public transport will have their safety compromised.

Portsmouth`s newest commercial Radio Station, operating and based in Southampton, has been on the air for just over a week and a more sleep-inducing  broadcaster I've yet to find. (says, Pete Cross – former DJ and now Entertainment Agent).

At portsmouthnews.tv, we’re working on a series of short videos showing the effect that drunkenness, particularly among the young in our area, is having on the rest of us.

The sad thing is, we are paying out a fortune in taxes, just to deliver the services from Police, Ambulance and the Hospital’s A&E Department, not to mention the cost imposed upon our Councils, who have to clear up the mess.

I note the new owners of South Parade Pier are planning to take it back to its 1950s glory - best of luck to them but I would suggest they take a closer look at the many old black and white pictures of Southsea from the time.

The Pier had Summer Shows then (try putting one on now and you`d be bankrupt within weeks) the beach was packed, the traffic was heaving, the hotel opposite  was chock a block, Canoe Lake was like a scene from Blackpool.

Is this Portsmouth or the Wild West?

As new regulations come into force requiring bouncers (door supervisors) and other security staff employed by pubs and clubs to be trained in restraint, first aid and how to spot terrorists, of all things, I can’t help wondering how we as a society have let the current state of affairs come about.

Guildhall Walk, once the southern end of Commercial Road, always had a good sprinkling of pubs where people could meet and the odd sailor might get ejected and swiftly returned to barracks in the Naval Provost’s van, but never was there trouble like we have nowadays.
